SoBran is seeking a Research Support Specialist II to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. 

OVERVIEW:   Responsibilities of this position are that of a Research Support Specialist II for the NIH, Vaccine Research Center (VRC) Laboratory Animal Research Contract (LARC). 

Description of Duties:

  1. Understands and follow all SOP’s and Quality Assurance Standards
  2. Perform basic and advanced technical procedures (e.g. injections, blood, mucus and tissue collection, biopsies, BAL’s etc.) in support of VRC research studies
  3. Assist with specialized procedures (e.g. surgeries, apheresis, necropsies etc.)
  4. Monitor animal health and communicate abnormalities with the VRC veterinarian and scientific staff for 200+ non-human primates
  5. Provide pre and post monitoring of vital signs (respiration, heart rate, body temperature, pulse, etc.) of animals scheduled for technical procedures
  6. Assist veterinarian with examinations and procedures, and alert veterinarian of emergencies or animal problems
  7. Assist Project Manager with project needs which include scheduling, helping to prepare for procedures, solve everyday problems with minimal supervision, while maintaining an air of professionalism
  8. Maintain laboratory equipment and technical support areas
  9. Calculate doses
  10. Always think safety first when performing daily duties
  11. Perform all technical procedures in accordance with federal and facility policies
  12. Work independently and interact with all levels of the organization
  13. Assume shared responsibilities with other defined staff in the absence of the Project Manager
  14. Maintain accurate records of technical procedures
  15. Participate in weekly staff meetings
  16. Perform all other duties as assigned by management

Schedule Requirements: All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 7:00 am and depart at 3:30 pm M-F. In addition you will be expected to work extra hours during an emergency situation or if any unexpected situation arise until work is completed.

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a laboratory animal research environment
  • Highly professional, focused, and a quick learner
  • Excellent communication skills and accurate lab record keeping a must
  • Specific computer knowledge, use of databases such as Access. 

Required Education:  

  • B.S. or M.S. (preferred) degree in a scientific discipline or have a B.S. or AA degree and practical lab experience in the required position
  • AALAS Certification at the LATG Level (or achieving this certification within 1 year of employment)
