The General Accounting department has overall responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of the University financial statements, for the production of external financial statements and certain key internal financial management reports, preparation of the Federal and State tax returns, and for certain aspects of Federal and State tax compliance. General Accounting seeks an individual with expertise in complex taxation principles as well as the ability to enable effective interaction with a broad range of University management and departments to fill its available Manager of Taxation Services position.


The Manager of Taxation Services will provide leadership and direction on taxation matters as well as oversight to the tax department. Working with the senior finance directors and the legal department this individual will work to ensure full compliance with the Internal Revenue Service code. The Manager of Taxation Services will also:
  • Develop operational policies and procedures within the tax department to ensure maximum efficiency. Provide direction and work with other administrative departments to improve data collection and other operational processes supporting compliance with all filing requirements.
  • Coordinate the preparation and filing of all tax returns for Tufts University and its related organizations. These returns include Forms 990, 990T, Form PC, Mass Sales and Use Returns. Prepare and compile supporting documentation for these filings as necessary.
  • Improve and develop processes for identifying unrelated business income to ensure that all sources are determined and properly treated in accordance with the tax code. Identify, review and document all international activities for both individual and University tax obligations that arise from engaging in activities abroad.
  • Provide specialized and industry-specific guidance to appropriate Tufts personnel on issues related to tax reporting and compliance. Serve as the point of contact for the University regarding tax questions, and as primary liaison with federal and state tax authorities as necessary.
  • Communicate with and support other departments across the Tufts community to ensure they are informed of any tax issues that impact their area, and to ensure that policies/procedures are created in response as necessary.
Basic Requirements:
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business or related field.
  2. Minimum of five years of experience.
  3. CPA or equivalent.
  4. Experience with the programs of Microsoft Office.
  5. Tax expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:Thorough knowledge of accounting and taxation principles together with a minimum of five to seven years experience in either public accounting with a focus on taxation or a not for profit tax department is highly desirable. Experience in higher education or not-for-profits is a plus. Proven interpersonal, communication, team and leadership skills are strongly valued.
